Sudarshan’s Dance Idiom in Films
It was an interesting meander in Sudarshan’s career when he was approached by leading directors to choreograph film sequences as an extension of the visual narrative using the abstraction of his Contemporary dance idiom which was also an attempt to change the way dance was used in bengali films. His eclectic approach to choreography in films varied from thematic compositions set to music like ‘Ramayana’ chapter in TAKE ONE or the ‘Tree Theme’ in NIRBAAK, or the ‘Church’ act in CHARULATA 2011. Much later Sudarshan was also encouraged to choreograph songs and special dance acts with the pinch of his signature style like ‘Tomar Ki Naam’ in SHAHEB BIBI GOOLAM, ‘Behaya Raat’ in MICHAEL, ‘Makeover’ song in ASCHORJYO PRODEEP and so on.
