The Dance Form .
My Dance- My Body- My Voice
Looking and being inspired by dancers like Manjushri Chaki Sarkar, Ranjabati Sarkar, Pt. Narendra Sharma, and Chandralekha in the formative years, Sudarshan wanted to bring and explore a new trend in Indian Contemporary dance beyond what was seen and offered in 90s in Eastern India.
He was also deeply influenced by Uday Shankar’s revolutionary expression of fluidity of the body, the transational fusion of styles and the deep Indianess. A close awareness of Rabindranath Tagore’s literature, music and theatre also offered a global relevance of a new thought of movement idiom.
A need to create abstract movement free from influences. A movement organic, bodily and hence deeply derivative of one’s personality and choice and therefore modern and contemporary at once.
A trend of innovation evolved either through exclusion, deviation, fusion or inclusion and so never in conflict with the spontenity of the motoric faculty and body articulation and counter or reject the tradition within.
So the form always evolved and kept changing. The movement technique and vocabulory imbibes from ancient Indian body history of ‘karanas’ (Natya shashtra) to relevant Western breathing techniques to modern contact, improvisatory and tuning solo and group work methods. The form is reflectve of South Asian sensitivity, experimental body stylistic and a personalsed signature which combines the abstraction of the traditonal hand gestures (mudras)in Bharat Natyam to the sway of the torso in ‘Churipus ‘ of Kathakali to the fluidity of physicality of Contemporary dance without any barrier but moves in ease from one to the other as a comprehensive aesthetic unit!!!
